Purple
Party raises money for Cancer Research through hosting purple parties around
the world. Anyone can host a Purple Party, it doesn't have to be costly or
formal and can transform a usually mundane office meeting or after works drinks.
Buildoffsite hosted a Purple Party at the annual Christmas dinner. Members were asked to wear something purple and dig deep for charity and raised £467 for Cancer Research. At the dinner Richard Ogden, chair of buildoffsite, made Purple Party the official charity for buildoffsite and pledged to make the Purple Party buildoffsite Christmas dinner an annual event.

"Cancer Research UK do incredible work by providing the funds for world-class clinical research and the development of new treatments for cancer. I personally benefited from a very new type of treatment earlier this year for my advanced bowel cancer, trials for which were only completed in 2005, without which I probably would not be here typing this today. However, rather than a specific bowel cancer charity, I chose Cancer Research UK to receive the funds from our purple parties as I feel strongly that all cancer patients should benefit, not just those with my type of cancer. Cancer and chemotherapy are utterly horrendous experiences no matter what part of the body is affected.
"Bowel cancer is not a sexy disease and we do not talk about our bottoms in company but it is the 2nd highest cause of cancer death (after lung cancer; breast cancer is 3rd). The key message to all however is that bowel cancer is often preventable through diet and is very curable if caught early. Be aware of that - it is very important, so please never ignore any unusual symptoms.
"I am so grateful to everyone involved in purple party but especially to you, the guests, for digging deep. It really will make a difference. Thank you."
It was with great sadness that Jan Baird lost her battle to cancer in June 2007.
Buildoffsite will continue to support this charity in memory of Jan who was loved and special to all who came into contact with her.
She will be greatly missed. |
Jan Baird has worked in the construction industry for almost 20 years, latterly as an events and PR consultant (JSB Marketing Services) responsible for organising flagship conferences on offsite construction in the early 2000's.
She was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2004 and has been unable to continue
working apart from a brief spell in 2005. She wanted to do some fundraising
for her chosen charity, Cancer Research UK, and came up with the idea of everyone
she knew organising a purple party - purple being her corporate brand and
her favourite colour. So far, with the kind and generous support of buildoffsite,
over 50 purple parties have been held, raising in excess of £12,500.
